UNESCO estimates that the Ngorongoro Conservation Area hosts around 25,000 large mammals. Here, you’ll have the chance to see Africa’s iconic Big Five—elephants, rhinos, lions, leopards, and buffalo—alongside other favorites like hippos, zebras, antelopes, servals, and warthogs.

Most of these animals roam within a compact 260 km² (100 mi²) area, allowing for exciting sightings every 10-15 minutes on a safari drive. This high density of wildlife is one reason Ngorongoro holds its UNESCO World Heritage status.

Ngorongoro is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 600 bird species making it one of Tanzania’s most rewarding spots for bird enthusiasts.

Wildlife of Serengeti National Park?

On a safari in the Ngorongoro Crater with Wild Wave Adventures, you’ll encounter many of Tanzania’s iconic animals, as most remain within the crater year-round. Thousands of large mammals inhabit this compact area, offering visitors a chance to see nearly all the key savanna species within a single day.

A 2020 study led by Patricia D. Moehlman and Joseph O. Ogutu, titled Long-term Historical and Projected Herbivore Population Dynamics in Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania, provides detailed population estimates of the crater’s wildlife.

This survey excludes smaller mammals like servals, caracals, warthogs, and foxes, yet the estimated total number of mammals remains around 25,000. Although animal numbers fluctuate as some migrate in and out of the crater, Ngorongoro offers an unparalleled wildlife experience.

Where Can You Find Ngorongoro Conservation Area?

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area lies in northern Tanzania, bordering the Serengeti to the west and Lake Manyara to the south. Located 190 km (118 mi) from Tanzania’s main tourism hub, Arusha, it’s roughly a 4-hour drive. Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), the primary entry point for international travelers, is about 250 km (155 mi) away.

Many visitors begin their journey in Tarangire National Park, which is closer to Arusha, making it an ideal stop before Ngorongoro. After exploring Ngorongoro, travelers can continue to the renowned Serengeti National Park, just a 3-hour drive away, reaching their accommodation in time for an evening rest before the next day’s safari adventure.

Best time to Visit Ngorongoro Conservation Area?

The best time to visit the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania is during the dry season, from June to October. During these months, animals are easier to spot as they gather around water sources, and the vegetation is less dense, providing clear views. Wildlife is abundant, and the mild, cooler weather makes safari drives more comfortable.

The short rainy season from November to December is also a good time, as the rains are light, and the landscape becomes lush and green, offering great scenery and fewer tourists. The calving season in January and February is another highlight, as many animals give birth, attracting predators and creating unique wildlife interactions.

The long rainy season from March to May sees heavier rains, making the roads muddy and sometimes difficult to navigate, which can impact accessibility. However, if you’re looking for a quieter experience with lush landscapes, this can be a rewarding time for seasoned travelers.

Top Attractions in Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Apart from the iconic crater and its rich wildlife, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area offers several other fascinating sites worth exploring. Plan to spend an additional day to fully experience these hidden gems

Olduvai Gorge and the Historic Leakey Camp
Olduvai Gorge is a world-famous archaeological site where pioneering anthropologists Mary and Louis Leakey uncovered human fossils dating back 1.5 to 2 million years. The area now hosts the Olduvai Gorge Museum, which showcases detailed replicas of ancient tools and artifacts discovered during these groundbreaking excavations. Visitors can also relax at a nearby café while taking in sweeping views of the gorge and reflecting on its profound history.

Olmoti Crater
Nestled in the Ngorongoro Highlands, Olmoti Crater is a lesser-known hiking gem that offers a tranquil escape. Even during peak dry season, visitors are few, making it ideal for those seeking an immersive experience in Tanzania’s natural beauty, far from the bustling safari crowds.

Empakai Crater
Located north of the iconic Ngorongoro Crater, Empakai is an ancient volcanic marvel and one of the few areas within the reserve where hiking is permitted. To explore its stunning landscapes, visitors must be accompanied by an armed ranger. At its center lies the serene Lake Empakai, home to flocks of flamingos from November through May, adding a touch of pink to the crater’s unique ecosystem.

Nasera Rock
Rising approximately 50 meters (164 feet) above the savanna, Nasera Rock is a significant archaeological site near Olduvai Gorge. This impressive rock formation, towering like a 16-story building, has yielded primitive stone tools—axes, blades, and hammers—that date back around 300,000 years. These discoveries have provided scientists with valuable insights into the evolution of early human technology and behavior.

Frequently Asked Questions ?

How many Days do I need for a Ngorongoro Safari ?

A single day is generally enough to explore Ngorongoro’s main attraction—the crater and its abundant wildlife. Most safari tours begin early in the morning and wrap up by 2:00–3:00 PM, allowing for an in-depth experience within a compact timeframe. By evening, you’ll be transported to a lodge along the crater rim, where you can relax and reflect on the day’s adventure.

Cool mornings and evenings are typical at lodges along the crater rim, so packing a fleece jacket and a light windbreaker will enhance your comfort on safari.

For game drives, go with the classic safari look: pants or shorts paired with a khaki or olive shirt. It’s best to avoid white clothing, as it easily attracts dust. Any footwear will do, but lightweight sneakers are more comfortable than sandals for the terrain. If you plan to hike Olmoti or Empakai craters, trekking shoes are recommended.
