TRAVEL OVERVIEW
Important Travel Information
Destination Overview
Nestled just three degrees south of the equator in Northeastern Tanzania, Mount Kilimanjaro stands as Africa’s highest peak and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world. Of the seven iconic summits, Kilimanjaro is often considered the most accessible, requiring no technical climbing skills. With moderate fitness and determination, many climbers achieve its summit.
Is This Adventure for You?
Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you’ll be warmly greeted and transported to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. To fully prepare for your trek, we recommend a rest day before embarking. Travelers arriving from Nairobi can use the transfer as their rest day. For added relaxation, consider exploring the local rice fields and rainforest, shopping in Moshi, enjoying a poolside moment, or indulging in a rejuvenating massage.
The evening before your trek, your guide will provide a comprehensive briefing and assist in separating your trekking bag from other luggage. Rental gear is available if needed, and extra belongings can be safely stored at your hotel in Moshi.
The adventure begins the following morning with a hearty breakfast and final preparations at the trekking office. Depending on your route, a bumpy drive of up to an hour will take you to the trailhead. At the park gate, you’ll finalize preparations, sign the national park registration book, and watch porters organize equipment and supplies. Be sure to keep essential items in your day pack, as porters move quickly ahead.
Daily hikes start around 8–9 AM, covering 5–6 hours at a slow, steady pace to aid acclimatization. Your guides will remind you to move “pole pole” (slowly, slowly) in Swahili. As you ascend, enjoy the stunning landscapes and take advantage of photo opportunities.
Summit day begins around midnight, with the final push varying by route and group pace. Some climbers stop at the crater rim, while others continue to Uhuru Peak. After celebrating your achievement, you’ll descend swiftly to minimize altitude effects and continue past your last campsite to the next for the night.
For improved acclimatization, you can add an extra day at the Horombo Huts (3,690 m/12,100 ft). This optional day includes resting or exploring Mawenzi basecamp, providing a better understanding of Kilimanjaro’s conditions before continuing your ascent.
Travel Companions
Groups are limited to 5–7 participants, with the option to combine groups starting on the same route and date. Private groups can also be arranged at no additional cost. Solo travelers may be added to groups where possible, though this cannot be guaranteed. Larger groups can also be accommodated seamlessly.
